Have you been suffering from Sinusitis for a long time? Sinus surgery would be the best treatment for patients who have not shown improvement to other medical therapies.

The prime medications rendered to patients suffering from sinusitis include decongestants, nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines and antibiotics. There are certain occasions when these therapies have no effect on the patient. It is at this juncture when a sinus surgery is recommendable. With the latest advancements made in the field of medicine, treatment of sinusitis has become more comfortable.

The aim of surgical treatment is to remove blockage in order to improve the drainage of sinuses. Blockage may be in the form of growths, swollen or damaged tissue or a foreign object clogging the nasal passage. Currently there are numerous sinus surgery options that one can opt for. The most important types are discussed below:

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

This involves the insertion of endoscopes through the nostrils to get a good view of the inside of a nasal cavity. Thereafter the obstructive tissues are removed leaving no visible scar on the face since the entire cleaning is done through the nostrils alone. This therapy is the minimally invasive. After the surgery, the patient will have to undergo a nasal irrigation to prevent nasal crusting.

Sinus Balloon Surgery

This process is quite simpler than the previous one and often referred to as Sinuplasty. While endoscopy requires general anesthesia, balloon surgery can be performed under local anesthesia. A small instrument with a balloon is inserted into the area to be treated. The balloon is inflated and deflated that widens the drainage pathways and once dilation is complete, the instrument is removed. The best thing about this surgery is that the patients can return back to normal within 24 hours.

Caldwell Luc operation

This is done to improve the drainage of the maxillary sinus, a cavity beneath the eye. A window is created in the upper jaw just above the molar teeth. This way a surgical chisel is used to clear off the passage or remove any damaged tissue. This surgery also helps in removing malignant cysts.

Image guided surgery

This can be referred to as the Revision Endoscopy surgery that involves latest tools for an imageguided surgery. It helps navigate the surgical instruments to the exact part of the nasal passage that needs treatment. The relief this treatment gives is more precise and perpetual.

Endoscopy and Sinuplasty are the two most prominent types of Sinus surgery. So if you are suffering since a long time, you better opt for surgical methods that have evidently shown good results.
