Arthritis is a crippling disease. Working with patients suffering from this condition has been humbling. Before I understood what they were going through, I wondered how a thumb joint could look out of the ordinary. If a person is going to get this condition, it is said to begin around middle age (40) and beyond. Two types or arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis affects the bone and joints, there is a common spice that relieves symptoms from both.

What helps with the symptoms of these two types or arthritis? And what are their definitions?

What is Osteoarthritis? A degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone, most common from middle age onward, it causes pain and stiffness, especially in the hip, knee, and thumb joints.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis? It is a chronic progressive disease causing inflammation in the joints and resulting in painful deformity, especially in the fingers, wrists, feet, and ankles.

What can help with the inflammation? A spice name Ginger has been proven in studies to lessen the pain level and improve the mobility of patients with these conditions. Until this knowledge, I had no idea of this useful benefit. Regularly, I make tea-using ginger. The taste is mellow yet it can be hot. It depends upon how much is used each time.

What is the origin of ginger? Ginger is native to southeastern Asia. It was a very expensive spice when it could only be exported from Asia. There are top producers today in Jamaica, India, Fiji, Indonesia and Australia so it is not as expensive like it used to be. In your local grocery store in the produce area, you should be able to find this spice.

What does Ginger look like? The contents of ginger can be yellow, white or red, depending upon the variety it is. The outside of it is covered with a brownish skin that may be either thick or thin depending if the plant is full-grown or not. I use ginger frequently. The yellow and white insides are the only ones I have seen. It would be interesting to see ginger red on the inside.

What are ways to consume ginger? As much as 1/4 slice of fresh ginger can be cooked in food. I have sliced ginger in with garlic when I baked barbecue chicken in the oven. It is so delicious. The flavor is freshly unique. It gives the chicken a spicy hot taste. Tea can also be made by putting the 1/4-inch slice of ginger into a hot cup of water. I sometimes add ginger and a lemon into a small pot of water to boil for about eight minutes.

Studies have shown how the ginger spice fights the pain and joint inflammation of Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Trying this spice may make you feel better. Remember it is always best to notify your doctor first.
