Cosmetic Dentistry - An Ideal Way to Have a Rocking Smile
Beyond reconstruction and maintenance of issues such as oral cavities, the modern dental patients desire an esthetic appearance. Many people seek dental care to improve their looks, and turn to their cosmetic dentist in Massachusetts for cosmetic restorations and esthetic correction of diseased tissues, stains and other maladies of the mouth. Even though most cosmetic dentistry procedures can be completed by the dentist, some require a team consisting of the dentist and other dental personnel such as prosthodontist, oral surgeon, periodontist, and more.
The two terms that completely describe cosmetic dentistry are: smile makeover for a beautiful smile and full mouth reconstruction, the repair of maladies from birth, disease or dental health issues. Some of the treatments used in cosmetic dentistry are:
Teeth Whitening: One of the most commonly-requested cosmetic dental procedures is teeth whitening or lightening of tooth surfaces. Bleaching of teeth, as defined by the FDA, is the whitening of teeth beyond their natural color such as lessening of brown bands, while tooth whitening is the restoration of natural tooth color.
Tooth Bonding and Veneer Application: Tooth bonding and veneer application are alternatives to tooth whitening, particularly if the tooth surfaces are excessively stained or have other irregularities such as open spaces, broken edges, pitted surfaces, and misshaped teeth.
Cosmetic Tooth Restorations: These are completed using materials that resemble enamel tissue. Older amalgam fillings are replaced using composite material to give the whole mouth a natural look. Restorative procedures includes inlay, outlay and tooth crowns.
Dental implants: Dental implants are titanium fixtures that are surgically installed in the jawbone and used to stabilize or serve as an anchor for a tooth, an appliance, or a denture. They may be used as an alternative to a fixed bridge or in areas where tooth replacement requires stability.
Accelerated Orthodontic Treatment: It is a multiple step process where the teeth are aligned and banded, sometimes after rectification that provides space for tooth movement. This slimming or narrowing of teeth eliminates the need for extraction. With accelerated orthodontics, the task can be accomplished in three to nine months.
Periodontal Tissue Surgery: It is also termed as Mucogingival surgery that can be performed for diseased tissue or to enhance patient’s smile.
Other treatments are gingival reduction for crown lengthening, gingival contouring, exposing unerupted teeth and enlarged labial frenum; gingival augmentation that involves soft tissue grafting, gingival recession, pocket depth reduction, exposed root coverings, ridge augmentation and more.
