The Art of Communication

Communication is obviously a key part of any successful relationship, but sometimes, it is difficult to know what it is that you are trying to communicate. There is a big difference between communicating and talking. When somebody talks to you, you basically have three options. You can let that person’s words sink in and really take what they have to say to heart. You can seem as though you are listening while you let the other person’s words go in one ear and out the other.  Or, you can listen to the person talking, understand what they are trying to tell you, respect their opinion, but respectfully disagree.

By definition, Communicating means to exchange or interchange thoughts, ideas, or feelings. The definition of talking is to express in words. The difference in these two words is that it takes only one person to talk, and it takes two people to effectively communicate. In a relationship, you really need to try and make sure that you keep the lines of communication open. A relationship is a partnership in which two people have equal standings, and one of the best ways to express how you feel about each other is by communicating. Communication is a mature step towards a strong relationship for any couple and this communication is for the two of you and the two of you alone.

When communicating any type of idea or feeling to your partner, it is important to make sure that you are both on the same page in your relationship. You should talk to each other about the ideals of what you both want in this relationship as well as your plans and goals for the future as a couple. It is always a good idea to know where both people stand in a relationship; that makes sure that both of you know how you feel about each other, which can in turn help eliminate friction in this relationship in the future.

Sometimes, whenever people communicate to each other, they don’t always tell the truth. This is always a bad idea. When you are in a relationship, there needs to be an open line of honesty. The truth can be the most difficult thing to say, but it is the only thing that you need to say, for if there is not honesty in a relationship, it can end up being a time bomb waiting to detonate. It’s completely unrealistic to say that you are always going to tell the one hundred percent truth, but it is also good if you set a goal for yourself to be as open and honest as you can with your partner. Talk to your significant other about the aspect of honesty; let them know that you want to always be honest with each other and explain why.

When it comes to the art of communication, there is a lot to say, but the absolute best way for you to know how to communicate with your partner is to simply talk to them. Communicate with them. Ask your lover how they feel, what they want, what they dream of, what they aspire to be, who they want to be like. Talk about what you both want together in the future, and what you want from each other. Relationships are a give and take.  You both need to give so that you are both able to get what you need from each other.
