The protagonist in the maladies “Interpreter of Maladies”, “Sexy”, and “The Third and Final Continent” have internal conflicts which is due to choice of life. They are all stuck between two cultures, the Indian life between the Western World lives. Life is not the same as before and now it is a question of human behavior whether it is right choice of life or not.

All three protagonists are Indians with adolescence of Indian traditions, searching for excitement of the Western World life which they have to deal with every day. And they are excited for what this new culture can bring to their new lives. They want to keep the Indian traditions but at the same time fall down for the excitement that occur in everyday life in the Western World. The protagonist deal with human behavior and their choices of life especially love. They all know the awareness of Indian traditions and what is right according to Indian culture.The conflicts are resolved when the protagonists realize the fact of difference between these two cultures and how it effects on their lives. “Interpreter of Maladies” deals with dilemmas of Indian culture and nostalgic feelings at a foreign culture. “Sexy” deals with falling relationship of a young Indian emigrant woman and her feelings to a married man. “The Third and Final Continent” deals with situation in life, a period of time in life that the protagonist feels as important moment of his life. These three maladies are interpretations of human lives between two cultures.

Jhumpa Lahiri is an interpreter of maladies of Indian immigrants, either settled in America or deals with Western World life. All three stories are afflicting modern society and tell us about seeking of love beyond barriers of culture. The stories are not about Indian culture. Indian culture is always in the background. Lahiri interprets maladies of Indian characters and their lives around the Western World and about emotions of humanity. How their lives change because of moments that impact on them.
