Botox is an injectable protein derived from botulism toxin and injected beneath the skin in order to eliminate facial lines and wrinkles by minimizing them or smoothing them out.  Facial muscles are paralyzed or relaxed with lower doses of Botox are injected.  This gives the face a cleaner and smoother appearance.  One of the more popular versions is Radiesse, a treatment that utilizes a cosmetic filler that is longer lasting in nature (9 to 18 months on average).

Why is Botox so Popular?   The growth in popularity of Botox treatments over the past decade has been attributed to several reasons including the following:

  •  Botox is much more affordable than cosmetic surgery
  •  Fewer side effects occur (e.g. bruising, swelling, etc.)
  • Results are almost immediate
  • The procedure is much less invasive than face lifts

Compared to individuals who undergo cosmetic surgeries such as face lifts, the persons who undergo Botox injections do not have to deal with bandages on their face, bruising from the surgery, and swelling of the area that was surgically altered.  With cosmetic surgery, it may take months to see noticeable results whereas the results of Botox injections are immediate while the swelling that occurs usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours.

Risks to be Aware Of

As with any cosmetic procedure, where there are benefits there is always some element of risk involved when getting Botox injections.  Although these risks and side effects are rare, there is the occasional allergic reaction to treatments that may occur.  Additionally, since the procedure numbs the facial muscles in the area where Botox is injected, facial expressions may become temporarily frozen.  Examples of this would be the look of surprise or possibly appearing to have a permanent frown on one’s face.  Regardless, these inconveniences are only temporary and will eventually subside within a few days.

A Word about Radiesse

The popularity of Radiesse is based on the longevity of the treatment as the results typically last anywhere from 9 to 18 months in duration.  In addition to smoothing out facial lines and wrinkles, Radiesse is used to:

  • flat or sunken cheeks are enhanced
  • hands can be rejuvenated
  • improve nose profiles and shapes
  • jaw lines are restored and jowls are hidden

Most importantly, by employing advanced microsphere technology, Radiesse helps promote collagen growth naturally and safely, making it one of the more popular Botox treatments.
