Epoxy flooring is a flooring surface that is made up of multiple layers of epoxy applied to a depth of at least two millimeters. Epoxy is the cured end product of epoxy resins.

Epoxy is the combination of resins and hardeners. The chemical reaction between these 2 components forms a rigid plastic material that bonds well and is resistant to degradation. It can be used in garages, commercial or industrial surfaces and hospitals. There are many benefits that come with Epoxy flooring but it is important to understand the process.

As an example, suppose a garage floor needed floor coating via epoxy. What would the process entail?

a) Determine if the floor already has a coating on it. If it does, it will require stripping before continuing with applying the coating.

b) If a car has leaked fluid onto the floor leaving behind a stain, it has to be removed. Use an industrial degreaser or solvent based cleaner.

c) Test random areas for undetected sealers by taking a small cup of muriatic acid mixed at a ratio of 4 parts water to one part acid. The solution will fizz if no coating is present

d) Etch, presoak and rinse the entire floor.

e) Allow the floor to dry.

f) Use the epoxy resin with a catalyst which will allow the resin to harden.

g) Calculate the amount of material needed and apply the coat with the color pigment of choice.

h) Use a paint roller to apply the coat across the garage floor.

i) Allow the solution to harden over a period of time. Then recoat the floor to leave behind a glossy shine.

There are many benefits that epoxy flooring will provide consumers from all walks of life. If they are homeowners, hospitals or hotels, this type of service will be an advantage.

1) Easy to clean and maintain - Epoxy floor coatings are easy to maintain. There is little chance for cracks to occur over a period of time.

2) Versatile: Epoxy flooring is useful for offices and industrial surfaces where a company logo and other patterns can be etched easily on the floor.

3) Long Term durability - With epoxy being a reliable bonding agent, the chances of corrosion over time is less likely. It evens out the bumps and holes in the floor with little chance of reoccurrence.

4) Face lift -- An epoxy floor coating will create that visually appealing look the consumer is looking for. It’s the ‘facelift’ for floors.

Epoxy floors are durable, seamless and easy to clean. It’s the right choice for all consumers. The author of this article is passionate about concrete floors, so he often writes about concrete staining, acid staining, epoxy flooring, epoxy floor coating etc. For more information, please visit concretesolutionskc.com/epoxy-flooring
