Move over Serena and Venus Williams. You are yesterday’s news. Your rivalry with each other has become banal and insipid. We need new competition, fresh faces and on field animosity between people who are not blood related. You guys took so long to put one over the other that we decided to move on with two other Tennis stars equally matched in all aspects just like you two. And it is the heat between these two that we are looking forward to this year. If you are not careful, these two will replace you Williams sisters soon enough. It looks Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Maria Sharapova of Russia might do just that.

Victoria Azarenka is Belarusian player who is currently ranked number one in the whole world. She has reaped a significant amount of plaudits by the time she turned twenty three. Some of the titles that she has won over the years include  two Australian Open singles titles;  two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles—the 2007 US Open and the 2008 French Open , bronze and gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Besides Sharapova, she was locked in intense rivalries with Serena William, Marion Bartoli and Li Na.

Maria Sharapova profile fits beautifully in to that of a Russian femme fatale as her serves border on deadly. She is believed to have one of the most powerful serves in the whole of Tennis. As of February, 2013, she ranks number three in the world though in 2005 she was ranked number one. Statistically speaking, Sharapova has more titles to her name that Azarenka, owing to the fact that she is a couple of years senior to the Belarusian player. Sharapova has an astounding tally of  27 WTA singles titles, inclusive of four Grand Slam singles titles, to her credit. She is also a silver medalist at the Summer Olympics in 2012.

A rivalry between these two female tennis stars has attained legendary status. They have battled it out with each other in twelve different occasions. The competition came to full boil during the year 2012 as they faced each other six times that year, including four finals. Presently Victoria Azarenka is at the lead with 5–1 in all finals and 2–0 in Grand Slam matches and 7-5 as a complete tally. They are both highly skilled, forged with the essence of competitive spirits which is why it is so hard to determine who will triumph in the end.
