Vauxhall Astra – A Refined Family Hatchback

The latest generation of the Vauxhall Astra made its debut in 2009. Its smooth design and posh interior was in direct competition with VW Golf.  The Astra doesn’t have the same appeal as the VW Golf but it still has a relaxing drive. There are lots of trims and engines available for the Astra. The latest addition to the Astra range; the Sport Tourer and stylish GTC coupe have further enhanced its appeal. The Vauxhall Astra doesn’t please the eye as does a SEAT Leon or Ford Focus but it still looks the part and drives well.

The Vauxhall Astra comes in Expression, ES, ES Tech, Exclusiv, Excite, Sri, SE and Elite trim levels. The base level versions get simple plastic wheel trims where as ES Tech and above alloy wheels and extra chrome ornamentation. Vauxhall has tried to give the cabin a high-class feel but it can’t match the VW Golf in quality. All models get electric windows, air-con and aux-in socket where as the Elite models have leather trim and climate control. Astra makes an impression with its fine-tuning and soothe.

The base level 1.4-litre and 1.6-lotre petrols are poor quality and timid but the turbocharged 138bhp 1.4-litre and 178bhp 1.6-litre can pack a punch. Diesel users can choose from 1.3-litre, 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre units which give a decent push. All models get a five or six speed manual gearbox while a six-speed auto is an option. On bendy roads, the Astra is full of grip but the steering is lifeless which means it can’t compete with Ford Focus for fun. The Astra has been awarded a full five-star Euro NCAP rating which makes it a strong contender for a family car. All trims come equipped with six airbags and electronic stability control.

Vauxhall’s are built solidly which make them a reliable choice. The Astra also offers a unique choice to its first owner as it gives a warranty that lasts the lifetime of the car or 100,000 miles. If you’re looking for an economical car, then the ECOflex models make a persuasive choice. The best engine is the 1.7-litre, which when mated to stop-start technology, cuts the CO2 emissions to just 99g/km. It also gives 76.3mpg. However, the petrol models are not so fast, in particular the turbocharged 1.6-litre turbo. It will cost you more in tax as the CO2 emissions are 160g/km. This Vauxhall is one of the priciest family hatchback choices but top of the range versions do offer lots of kit for your cash.
