Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is something every business with an online presence has to take into account. There is a range of different publishing groups, however. All of them have differing levels of expertise. You need to consider which group you fall into, and act accordingly.

In collaboration with a leading digital marketing agency in Glasgow, we have come up with four different publishing groups. See which one you fall into and which ones you need to avoid.

Group 1 - The Ignorant

This group is self-explanatory. They are on level one. They do not know about SEO and they do not understand SEO. If you are on this level, it does not matter. As long as you acknowledge you need the help of an expert SEO agency, there is no reason why you cannot get the results you are looking for.

What you need to avoid is denial. Do not avoid acknowledging your shortcomings. These people tend to plough on regardless, only to fail to get what they were targeting.

Group 2 - The Misinformed

In many ways, this group is similar to group one. They are both characterised by ignorance. The difference is group two will have a basic knowledge of SEO. They will know what it stands for and what they are supposed to be aiming for. The problem is they have learned through the wrong resources.

These people think they know about SEO, but they have been misled. They may hold common misconceptions, such as that spamming keywords throughout articles remains a good way to get to the first page of the Google search index.

Group 3 - The Scammers

These people are well aware of what they are doing, but they choose to break Google’s guidelines in order to take advantage of a quick boost in rankings. This is the essence of the world of affiliate marketing. Websites only remain relevant for a few days at best, but they hope to take advantage of it.

They are not breaching the rules through ignorance. They are well aware of what they are doing. Google clamps down hard on anyone who falls into this group.

Group 4 - Those Who Know

Group 4 is the group you want to be in. It is the group where people know what they are talking about and what they are doing. A reputable digital marketing agency would fall into this group, just as an individual who has trained in SEO would. It requires long hours of training and understanding to make it into group four.

All tactics used in this group will fall into the white hat SEO category.

So What Does this Mean?

What this means is you need to be spending time making sure you avoid group two and group three. Group two and group three are the most dangerous because these are the groups Google seeks to actively penalise.

If you are not yet ready to take control of your own SEO, you should search for an agency who can give you a hand. Investing in SEO now can lead to greater returns later on. Not investing in SEO can set your business back months, or even years.
