Low ceiling are pretty modern nowadays and a lot of building designers make them seem even lower. But there are people that don't like this type of look and want to change it. If the ceilings in your home look small and make you feel cramped there are a few ways that you can fix it. Designers and decorators have thought a lot about the subjects and here is what they advise.

The first and most recommended type of improvement for a low ceiling is painting it in bright white. White paint increases the sense of height and it is quite reflective which will open up the room and make it seem a lot more spacious. There are two types of finishes that are highly discussed among home designers and it's really up to you which one you'll choose for your home. The first one is to make a gloss finish that will reflect the light from the ceiling thus giving it the impression of height and space. The opposite choice is a mate finish that makes the ceiling "disappear" and helps to make any faults that the painters have made invisible.

If you're not a fan of the white colour and you think that it will create a lot of cleaning chores you can also use lighter and cool pastel range shade colours. The most important thing is to choose a colour that is lighter than the one on the walls.

Vertical stripes on the walls can also create the sensation of height and open up the room some more. You can either paint the stripes straight on the walls or put striped wallpapers.

Avoid the installation of ceiling fans, large light fixtures and chandeliers. The sense of height will be disrupted if you install them and the flatness that helps it will disappear. You'll probably wonder where you will put the lighting then? That's easy, on the walls. Distribute the light on evenly and don't leave dark spaces because every dark corner will make the room look smaller.

Full-length curtains will also help in this project. Hang them as higher to the sealing as possible to achieve the best effect. And since we're talking about hanging, if you plan on hanging picture hang them higher than usual. This will create the illusion of height and will trick the eye of anyone who enters the room.

Large mirrors are always an option if you don't want to repaint anything and still make the room look bigger and more spacious.

For these tips of course you will have to do a bit of heavy work and it will cost you a certain amount of money. Be sure to choose a certified handyman company for installing and paint jobs to be sure that you'll not get scammed.
