If there is one thing that everybody hates,it is the stench of cigarette smoke. No matter how careful you are, cigarettes cling to anything they come into contact with. Even in houses with non-smokers, if you have bought the furniture second-hand or you have had guests over, you can be left with the smell for months and years to come.

There are a number of ways you can get rid of cigarette smells, or any unwanted smells for that matter. In this helpful guide, we are going to collaborate with Loch Ness Furniture, who sells furniture in Inverness, to give you some top tips.

Baking Soda Kills All : Baking soda is the master ingredient for absorbing smells. It has long been used as a way of purifying a room. There are two ways you can use baking soda to remove the smell of cigarettes.

Let's say you have a Harris Tweed chair you want to clean. Sprinkle some baking soda over the chair and leave it to settle. After a few hours, vacuum the baking soda away.

For other items of furniture, use an open cup or jar filled with baking soda. Leave it on top of the furniture and you will soon smell the smell of stale cigarettes ebbing away.

Coffee Grinds is a Great Alternative : Coffee grinds accomplish the same goal as baking soda. The reason why most people prefer to use baking soda is because you cannot sprinkle coffee onto your furniture, or it will leave stains behind. For non-fabric items, coffee grinds in a small container is a fantastic way of absorbing the smell. It will also leave the rich aroma of high-quality coffee behind, which is easy on the nasal passages.

Plain Old Fresh Air : We always recommend opening the windows and doors anyway to start removing the smell, but fresh air is a magic all its own. If you are home regularly, leaving the windows open can remove those smells you do not want to put up with.

The success of this tactic depends on where you live. If you live in an area where you can smell nothing but the rich aroma of fragrant flowers, it is almost like a commercial cleaner. On the other hand, if you live in the centre of the city, you should pass on this option.

A Complete Repaint : For other non-fabric types of Harris Tweed furniture, it may be a good idea to opt for a complete repaints. A newly painted piece of furniture works wonders for suppressing the smell of cigarettes. This will only work with some types of furniture, though. If you are working with particularly expensive pieces, you may find it is better to have a professional complete the work instead.

Take note, sometimes none of these options will work. If the smell is so strong, getting your furniture professionally cleaned may be the only way of making your house smell fresh again. If you are unsure about this, consult a professional and they will be able to supply you with some good advice.
