Diagnoses of prostate cancer are on the rise which is fueling more scientific research in traditional and nutritional therapies for prostate cancer prevention.  Recent findings from research studies reveal that a regular intake of two essential nutrients may help slow down and reduce the onset of prostate cancer in the United States.

Prevalence of Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer amongst American men, the first being skin cancer.  The American Cancer Society estimated 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer and about 28,170 deaths from prostate cancer in 2012. Their estimates also show that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Men of any age can develop prostate cancer, but it is most common in men over the age of 50. About two-thirds of prostate cancer cases are detected when men are over 65.1 During the period of 1999 to 2009, the total number of men diagnosed with prostate cancer declined.  However, as time goes on, the 65+ age group will comprise almost 20 percent of the population by 2030. Potential Protective Prostate Benefits of CoQ10 and Omega-3s
The new study reported in the British Journal of Nutrition, shows how omega-3 fatty acids and CoQ10 taken independently were seen to reduce prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in normal, healthy men.Normal PSA levels, also known as gamma-seminoprotein or kallikrein-3 (KLK3), are an indicator of a healthy prostate. Elevated levels of PSA are indicative of prostate cancer or other prostate disorders. PSA screenings are a marker used for detecting prostate cancers and for tracking the disease after it has been diagnosed. The study reported that a supplementary intake of omega-6 fatty acids resulted in PSA levels decreasing by 15 percent.

Men who regularly take omega-3 and CoQ10 dietary supplements may have more of a defense against prostate cancer. The team of researchers believes that these two nutrients may exert a protective benefit against prostate cancer or offer therapeutic protection in men who have prostate cancer. The 504 men who took part in the study were randomly assigned an omega-3 supplement, a CoQ10 supplement, an omega-6 supplement or a placebo for 12 weeks. The results showed that PSA levels declined by 30 percent and 33 percent respectively.

Scientists believe that omega 3 fatty acids exert anti-inflammatory effects through the mediation of a key enzyme in fatty acid metabolism. CoQ10 is believed to function as a non-specific stimulant for the immune system and plays a role in membrane stabilization.

More Promising Nutrients for Prostate Health
Scientists are also looking at lycopenes and soy isolflavones as natural compounds that may help protect against prostate cancer. Some studies have shown that certain vitamins and minerals such Vitamins D and E and selenium may offer cancer-protective effects.4
