Project management is a skill which every organization needs from time to time. Large organizations have professional Project Managers, but it may be that you are called on to look after a project in a smaller organization, without having any formal training in how to go about it.

So here are some tips which will help you manage any project successfully.

  • Establish the details of the project and write them down. What is the project designed to achieve? Who will be involved and what will their roles be? What resources are available? How will we measure success? How will we know when the project is finished?
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved. Who does what is critical, and needs to be planned at the earliest stage. You should identify and fill any skill gaps.

  • Ensure that you have the power to manage the project, the authority to command the resources you need and make sure that things get done. Responsibility without power is useless to a project manager.
  • Decide what the key milestones of the project are – you may even want to do critical path analysis to help with this. That way you will know if you are on track, or are heading for disaster. There are lots of online resources to help you do this.

  • Make sure that two way communication is constant; you need to know if there are any significant changes in plans, and you need to report major obstacles. Knowing when a problem is going to be too big for you to manage actually is managing the problem.
  • Don't allow Uncle Tom Cobley, and all to keep making changes to the original plan. Mission creep is your biggest enemy.

  • Document everything as you go.
  • Know when your project is completed and make sure you allowed funding for a big celebration at the end – you and your team will deserve it.
