After all, possessing a driver’s license and the car keys is proud accomplishment and something that every teenager desires and dreams, which ironically is the most parents’ worst nightmare.

However, if not a death sentence or an early grave, teen driving is still hazardous for youngsters as well as for others. Each year, accidents caused by teenagers cost millions of dollars (approx. $34 Billion in the U.S. in 2006) in property damage and life-altering physical injuries. Although these loses can still be recovered by insurance either entirely or partially, deaths resulting from teen driving (which by the way have high statistics) are completely irrevocable and irrecoverable.

It is sad but Motor vehicle traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the USA. What’s worse than that are the below mentioned facts that tell the tragic tale.

  • As per the data collected in the first half of 2012, the Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA) said the deaths of teenage drivers soared sharply by 19% in comparison to an earlier year.
  • The true cost of teenage driving accidents is quite evident in the total number of automobile deaths of teens (which is 3,500) and in the total number of crash related injuries requiring emergency-room attention (which is 350,000) in the year 2008.
  • Over 74,000 young people die or are injured each year by not wearing seatbelts.
  • Roughly 35,000 American teenagers have died in vehicle accidents in the past 5 years  accounting 7,000 a year or 19 every day.
  •  According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, a 16-year-old is 20 times more likely to be    killed in a crash than an adult.

Above mentioned facts and statistics are very limited but alarming enough to showcase the reality of teen driving.

Also from all of this, one thing that becomes the major mandate for safe teen driving is, the “control of the wheel and the whims” in which parents have to be highly responsible whether or not be the lawmakers.

To do so, Teen Driving Contract is a great tool that sets up an arrangement between parents and teens with a clear outline of the expectations in exchange for granting the privilege of driving.
