Medical education has undergone radical changes over the years. In the recent past, medical simulation has become a critical aspect of medical education. From the teaching of simple tasks and role-play to difficult cognitive encounters, medical simulation has indeed come of age. As such, medical simulation workshops are quite common in established medical schools throughout the world. However, it is important to note that in the medical profession, experience with real patients offers some of the most powerful and vivid lessons. As such, the full impact and range of an artificial environment may be quite hard to appreciate fully. Medical simulation workshops take place in bio-skills lab where the principal objective is to delve into the use of medical simulation across a broad spectrum of modern teaching techniques and to understand the evolution of this technique.

Medical simulation workshops are best for medical faculties that may offer little or no exposure to medical simulation as a tool for teaching. They are also ideal for professionals who may have had previous experience in standardized or virtual training environments. At the end of a standard training session, participants should be able to comprehend all modern simulation applications and modalities; they should be in a position to distinguish the various simulation resources available in that particular institution of medical education training and be in a position to assess suitable use of simulation. In addition, the trainees should gain a focused grasp of at least two medical education-training modalities based on simulation.

Hospital-based simulations involve high stakes teams such as the ICU and emergency departments. The outcome of a patient depends on a high performing and dedicated team. This is the modern medical arena where the difference between a patient living and dying depends on the efficiency with which this interdisciplinary musters during emergencies. The various teams need to muster the art of clear communication in order to be successful. The curriculum of medical simulation workshops has to factor in all manner of training necessary to achieve this. As such, these workshops may incorporate medical device training as well as training touching on tissue distribution and anatomic tissue.

Simulation workshops have a structured and safe environment that is critical in debriefing high stakes medical teams. This helps in addressing performance gaps that arise from teamwork deficiencies. As such, hospital administrators are able to enhance the performance of their teams. The direct beneficiary of these endeavors is patients who enjoy a higher rate of successful outcomes. These structured processes are also critical in the development of medical simulation curricula for raining a multi-disciplinary team.

Medical simulation enables trainees to understand the difference between skills and abilities, describe the difference between rehearsal and practice as well as summarizing and understanding different presentation techniques. They are also able to explain different motor skill theories and their relation to skills training/procedural simulation. In order to stay on top of simulation training, it is advisable to incorporate a technique for rehearsal into your daily skills training or procedural simulation.
