With the great interest in improving your health by making and drinking your own fruit and vegetable juices, much of it inspired by the documentary "Fat, sick and nearly dead", the market suddenly seems flooded with all kinds of juicers. So which one to choose? Obviously, the first place to look is at reliable tried and true brands like Breville, so I was very happy to have the chance to review the new Breville JE98XL Juice Fountain Plus.

The first impression of the Juice Fountain Plus is of a handsome, sturdy piece of equipment, with clean good looks and simple to operate controls. It's neat and compact, and would fit easily on most work surfaces. We all know that kitchen equipment which has to be stored away doesn't get used as often as it should, so being able to have a juicer to hand to use several times a day is a must for me.

Following the easy and clear instructions, I decided to start by juicing some berries, I had some fresh picked raspberries and strawberries from the garden. Wow! A fantastic juice in just seconds! Then, because I next wanted to try juicing something else, I cleaned the whole thing. Cleaning is often the downfall of kitchen equipment, but this one is surprisingly easy. The parts come apart and go back together again without any struggle, which is great for me as I have a little arthritis in my hands. Even the fine mesh was simple to rinse out under the faucet. I was able to make short work of getting ready for my next effort.

So what else could I juice? I went for a look in the garden, and saw far too many tomatoes! Picking a pound or two, I went back into the kitchen where the juicer was sitting on the counter waiting and ready to go. The tomato juice from my own Juliet tomatoes was, if anything, even more sensational than the berry juice. I added a little Worcester sauce and lemon, the taste was so great that I made another glassful straight away, this time adding some celery. This was truly delicious, and very soon I was dreaming up all sorts of juices that I wanted to make. I love a piece of kitchen equipment that isn't just a tool, but an inspiration. Mmmm, at this rate, I will be slim and healthy in no time at all!

So what are the facts and figures for the Breville Juice Fountain Plus? It has a large 1.1 quart juice capacity so it's ideal for a family, although of course you can make less if you want, and the pulp container is a very generous 2.6 quarts. The cutting disk is quality stainless steel, surrounded by a special Italian made filter with means the Juice Fountain Plus can extract up to 30% more juice and, importantly, 40% more vitamins, than other juicers. There's a simple two speed control, high speed for denser fruits and vegetables, lower speed for soft fruits and greens, and the extra wide chute means you can process most fruits and vegetables without too much additional preparation and cutting The whole machine says quality, solidity and safety to me. With a recommended retail price of $149.99, it's not the cheapest on the market, but it comes backed with the good name of Breville and with a one year warranty. And in the unlikely event that you should need them, spare parts are very easily obtainable.

The Breville Juice Fountain Plus is a recommendation for the health and taste conscious cook, it's so easy to use, it really gets your culinary creative "juices" flowing!
