A Universal Media Gateway or UMG, is one of the key factors in the Access subsystem of the NGN. This is the country's main access system being used today because of its multiple function ability and because its the most economical solution when the telecom network is part PSTN and part NGN.

Some of the features of the universal media gateway includes the following:

• This gateway supports inter-working between different networks.
• Different formats of traffic are converted.
• The universal media gateway functions as a Trunk and an Access gateway.
• It has an embedded signaling gateway.
• It processes the formats of different types of traffic flow, which allows a subscriber from one network to connect with someone in another network.
• The universal medial gateway's functionality can be separated into two parts which helps to understand the system better.
• SSM

The service switching module consists of four parts that include:

• Main control frame which supports service access and process simultaneously while managing and maintaining functions of the device.
• Extended Frame Control which is when the device is at max capacity, the extended frame doesn't support process and access functions of the user services but will provide connection management along with control function.
• Service Frame which processes services requested by the user.
• Central Switching Frame which handles multi-frame cascading function.

The Benefits Of A Universal Media Gateway

There are many benefits to a universal media gateway. These benefits are:

1. Existing copper lines and trunks are leveraged without having full access plant replacement.
2. Legacy line customers can be linked to SIP cloud services, IMS, mobility, IMSLiTE.
3. TDM switches and services can be replaced with cost-effective service.
4. Services like cable trunking and access is provided through PacketCable.
5. The world's leading core voice platform access is interoperability.
6. Carrier grade ports.
7. Comprehensive ESA, Emergency Stand Alone capabilities.

The universal media gateway works with media servers in order to provide access from different branches to the main network. It allows users to have access to telephony features and applications no matter which network they are using.

If you want to have quality it's most important that you use compatible protocols. A media gateway uses a single protocol to determine the way your voice packet travels through a network. A codec condenses the digital packet while figuring out the best bandwidth and quality needed to ensure the levels of effectiveness.

You'll find that there's quite a few network solution firms that can help struggling enterprises and businesses that are still using obsolete communication systems that haven't been able to keep up. There's been many advancements in the communications industry and in order to remain in the game it's important to keep up. More and more companies and individuals alike have turned to using mobile and portable devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets for their communications.
