How to Look After Your Lawn in Spring Photo by Colin Armstrong

After the harshness of winter, spring is an important season in caring for your lawn turf. At this time of year, the grass begins to grow,so giving your turf the due care and attention that it needs will allow it to look pristine throughout the rest of the year.

Cutting the Grass

As the grass begins to grow, you are going to need to start mowing it. In spring the best approach is to get into the routine of cutting the grass little and often. Set the height of your lawnmower to the highest setting so that around a quarter, but no more than a third, of the grass is cut.

Feeding the Grass

You must feed your lawn turf during this time of the year to ensure it gets the essential nutrients required to grow strong and healthy. Use some good quality lawn fertiliser and weed killer to give your lawn a denser and greener appearance.

Top Dressing

You may find that your lawn has become uneven during the winter. If so, some top seeding will help you even out the low areas. For optimum results you should carry out the process when the turf is dry (or at least not saturated), applying around 1-3 kilograms of top seed per square metre and brushing it into the surface.

Scarification

If yourturf is suffering a problem with moss or a build-up of dead grass, you will need to carry out scarification. This can be done using a spring-tine rake or electric/petrol scarifier and pulling it through the grass sward. You may find that some areas of the lawn are left thin after the process, so consider overseeding by brushing lawn seed into the affected areas.

Getting rid of weeds

Weeds are the biggest, and most unsightly, problem affecting turf,so annuals and perennials will need to be removed from the root. You can do this by using a trowel (click here to get one) and filling the affected area with topdressing and lawn seed. Bare patches of grass encourage the growth of weeds, so it’s important that you have a regime in place that ensures a dense and healthy lawn. Regular feeding (using good quality food) and mowing of the lawn with a sharp mowing blade will ensure the turf is able to out compete, and remain free of, weeds.
