Recent research has led to the discovery of plant stem cells, which are being used in skin care products to soothe and heal the skin, and promote collagen production. Stem cells are cells that have not been fully developed into their final form yet, so they still have the ability to become any number of cells, and can also help repair damaged cells. Since there are many diseases that result from damaged cells and mutated DNA, stem cells have a lot of promise in providing healing. The other bonus of using plant stem cells is that all of the intense emotional and ethical debating over animal stem cells is not necessary.

When it comes to stem cells from plants and skin care, they can do wonders with repairing sun damage, smoothing wrinkles, improving skin tone, increasing skin elasticity and moisture, and healing broken capillaries. Plant stem cells help the body's own cell turnover process at the epidermal layer, where a 2012 study showed there is daily activity occurring with regards to skin maintenance and wound healing, and the entire epidermis turns over once every two weeks. If the body's own cells are damaged by sun or pollution, or even just the aging process, they can be slow in turnover, so receiving help from plant stem cells aids in the process and helps reduce the appearance of aging as well. Plant stem cells can boost skin cell production by as much as 60%.

Currently one of the most useful stem cell sources is from an old apple tree variety from Switzerland called the Uttwiler Spatlauber. This apple has the ability to heal itself, so scratches received while on the tree repair themselves automatically. Now stem cells from this apple tree can be manufactured in the lab. Studies have shown that face creams using these stem cells can reduce the depth of wrinkles by as much as 15% in just one month. It may also provide some protection from harmful UV radiation.

Also from the Alps is a plant called edelweiss that has stem cells which work to reduce the appearance of wrinkles up to 15% in three weeks. Edelweiss has had to be strong to survive the harsh conditions on the tall peaks of the Alps, and it does strong work for skin cells, helping reverse collagen and hyaluronic acid production declines and heal damage from the sun. It contains some powerful antioxidants, too.

From the other side of the world comes gotu kola, a plant from Australasia and Africa. It, too, grows in high-altitude zones. It has been used for generations in Indian medicine to help heal wounds and reduce the pain of burns. In modern times it has been found to be effective at helping heal stretch marks, firming skin and reducing the appearance of cellulite, and aiding blood vessel strength.

Citrus stem cells help improve the appearance of the skin by stimulating fibroblast, collagen, and elastin production, as well as the enzyme keratinocyte transglutaminase (TGK). TGK helps the outer layers of skin rebuild themselves. Citrus stem cells help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Other plants that show a great deal of promise include date palms due to their ability to utilize water effectively in hot, dry climates; grape stem cells which provide protection from environmental attacks; echinacea stem cells which improve skin elasticity; gardenia jasminoides which boost collagen production; and lilac leaves which contain antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-acne agents.

Ageless Derma makes a product that takes advantage of the ability of plant stem cells to heal called Ageless Derma Stem Cell and Peptide Anti-Wrinkle Cream. This product comes from studying some of the most advanced research out there to provide skin relief from the damaging rays of the sun and heal skin from things like pollution and time. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin's texture and elasticity, and gives skin a firmness that time often takes away.

Ageless Derma Stem Cell and Peptide Anti-Wrinkle Cream is made from Argireline, coenzymeQ10, Matrixyl 3000, Swiss apple stem cells, sodium hyaluronate, SynColl peptides, and Vialox powder.

Plant stem cells are a much gentler way of achieving renewed skin over expensive and potentially damaging chemical peels or plastic surgery. Some companies are skeptical about plant stem cells' effectiveness, but with study after study showing promising results without the need for using animal stem cells, the future looks bright.
