You might be wearing one of your slim fit shirts, a t-shirt or maybe a jumper but what are they made of? There are numerous different materials that we use for clothing, each with different properties that make them ideal to make clothing with. Some materials are more likely to be used for clothing than others and regardless of what you may be wearing there is a good chance it is made using the following.

Polyester

Perhaps the most common material of all is polyester as it is ideal for the job and also very affordable. Polyester is a plastic that can be produced at low cost and it can be difficult to distinguish from more expensive natural materials. Polyester can also be combined with other materials to increase comfort and quality making it one of the most flexible materials available to us.

Cotton

Grown in fields, cotton comes from a plant that produces a soft fluffy head and this is then spun to create one of the most common clothing materials there is. Cotton is ideal for clothing because it is comfortable to wear and allows ventilation. Cotton is also very strong and clothing made from cotton is likely to keep its shape regardless of what rigours it may be subjected to. Most top quality clothing is made using 100% cotton.

Wool

Wool does a great job of keeping sheep warm in the winter so it is no surprise that it is perfect for making warm and chunky clothing and many of us are thankful for it when the winter arrives. Woolly jumpers can help to keep us warm during even the coldest of winters and they are also very comfortable to wear. Another reason why wool is so popular is that it can be knitted meaning anybody can create their own clothing from the comfort of their own home. For many people living in temperate climates a homemade woolly jumper is often high on the Christmas wish list.

Silk

Soft to the touch and great to look at, silk is a luxury material used all over the world and silk is made from the cocoons of the silk moth. Silk is often used to make lightweight, sexy clothing because of the way it feels on the skin although it can be used to make tougher clothing also. Such is the strength of silk that it is considered reliable enough to make parachutes with and is also often used to make sails with. If you need something to wear for a special occasion there’s a fairly good chance it will be made from silk.

If you are on the lookout for slim fit shirts you will find some made using a variety of different materials and you should find something that is just right for you.
