Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom is known by many nick names such as MC Mary Kom, Magnificent Mary or simply Mary Kom. She is proud Indian citizen, champion of a boxer and a doting mother of two children. Hailing from the tribal community of Manipur, she has fetched a name and earned a place in the unique history of our country. Even though she won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, she remains unchanged, forever true to her roots, values, principles and to the people that believed in her. She finally gave India a true icon that all its female kind can look up to. She has set the bench mark not just as an athlete but also as a truly honorable Indian and in turn has become India’s brave heart. • A Manipuri by nativity, she was born to Mangte Tompa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom , who earned their daily wages by working in Jhum fields.
• She is a high school dropout. She quit her higher studies after she failed to clear her ninth standard exams.
• Since she came from a conservative background and also because boxing is not exactly a conventional women’s sport, her parents were neither excited nor support for their daughter’s success. But now they have warmed up to the idea of having a boxing champion in the family.
• Her very first International trophy was a silver medal that she won in the 46kg weight category of a competition held in Pennsylvania, US.
• Ever since she won a gold medal at the second AIBA World Women’s Senior Boxing champion ship in Turkey, she has gone on to collect four more of those.
• For Mary Kom statistics and impressive performance, she was bestowed with the Arjuna Award in 2004, the Padma Shree in 2006 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2009.
• Besides the awards, the government found another way of honoring the country’s superstar by making her the Additional Superintendent of Police.
