Dr. Jen Brull of Plainville, Kansas, has a passion for improving the quality of health care and for her patients, enough is never enough. She always goes the extra mile. It was this philosophy that gave her the drive to pursue a federal certification for Meaningful Use for her groundbreaking implementation of electronic health records, or EHR.

Working closely with the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, Inc to reach this milestone, Dr. Brull became one of the first physicians in the United States to achieve Meaningful Use status, thereby leaving her mark in the world of medicine with her determination and dedication to better quality care for her patients.

As a client of e-MDs, a leading developer of EHR and practice management software, Dr. Brull sought to revolutionize the world of medicine by incorporating a more comprehensive kind of EHR into her private practice. By doing so, she hoped to maximize its usefulness by using every aspect of the software to her advantage.

At its most basic, an EHR is a computerized patient record that a physician can plug into a network of enterprise information systems. This allows the physician to gather larger ranges of data which often includes a patient's medical history, demographic, and other personal statistics in one location that is both convenient and easy to access.

The Solution Series from e-MDs allowed Dr. Brull to reach a new plateau for EHRs. By harnessing the power of the software and maximizing its usefulness, Dr. Brull proved to her practice and to the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology that EHRs can do more than simply provide patient information.

EHRs can also help physicians to provide better care for their patients by providing all the necessary information in an easily transferable format. For her efforts, Dr. Brull has qualified for the substantial incentive payment of $18,000; furthermore, she qualifies for an additional $44,000 Medicare-based incentive payment over the course of five years.

Dr. Brull is only one of thousands of physicians making use of e-MDs software, but she was the first physicians in Kansas to be federally certified for meaningful use. Michael Stearns, MD, President and CEO of e-MDs stated that she "quickly identified the value of using a comprehensive EHR," and that she has "emerged as a leading national user" of the groundbreaking technology.

Dr. Brull credits her success to her staff, the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, Inc, and the comprehensive EHR software provided by e-MDs. Without e-MDs, said Dr. Brull, reaching Meaningful Use status "would have been a much more arduous task!" In addition to her work with EHRs, Dr. Brull serves as the president of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, specializing in maternal and child care, preventive medicine, and chronic disease management.
